3 "Very Hollywood" Scenes
I hope to provide a little bit of laughter with this post. I will present to you three scenes that defy any sense of logic. Scenes that would, technically, lead to the demise of the main characters, thus ending the story right then and there. That’s no fun, though, right? Let’s be real, Hollywood movies don’t usually follow the rules of reality; they are, for lack of a better term, Hollywood movies! Anything is possible. Impossible is nothing. If you believe, you can achieve! etc. etc.
I think having a few head-shaking scenes in an otherwise well-made movie isn’t really a big deal, as long as it isn’t overdone.
Harrison Ford and the dam jump in The Fugitive
Dr. Kimble (Ford) is at a dead end. He’s in a pipe high above a dam. A deputy marshal is right behind him with his gun drawn. Game over.
Think again.
Dr. Kimble desperately wants to clear his name and will go to unbelievable lengths to prove it.
Exhibit A:
The bus from Speed and that gap in the freeway
Here we have the bomb-rigged bus staying above 50 mph to avoid detonation. It’s approaching a section of freeway with a sizable portion missing. They can’t slow down; they must push onward.
Impressive levitation—something you would find in a movie dealing with superpowers. Sandra Bullock is some driver! It stretches belief just a smidge, but it doesn’t detract from the fact that Speed is one of the best action movies around.
Arnie jumps off a plane in Commando
After witnessing this scene for the first time, I had a nice chuckle. It makes me like this movie even more because it perfectly embodies what the whole film is all about.
Arnie’s character has made his way to the underbelly of the airplane that was going to take him and his captor to their destination. He had different plans. Arnie discreetly killed the bad guy holding him against his will and now finds himself hanging on one of the plane’s wheels.
What expert timing to land in that marsh and walk away unscathed. That’s what having muscles lets you do!
Stay tuned for more superbly unrealistic and comically good movie scenes. I’m sure to find a few more.
